New sign going up at Proto’s Pizza, in the former Enzo’s space on 2nd Ave at 3rd St.
Grieve reported their arrival back in March. Looking to open in about two to three weeks.
The owner’s first go at a pizza place. Aims to hit the sweet spot of offering a high-quality slice for around $2.50. No dollar slices here. “I’d rather go out of business than have to compromise quality. You’re in New York. Do it right,” says Mr. Proto, a Brooklyn native.
Here’s hoping they nail it.
The slices in this neighborhood, for the most part, suck.*
Yeah, I said it.
They will, of course, offer a range of specialty pizzas, as well. So goes the trend. And, for now, the plan is to remain open until about midnight during the week and 2 AM on weekends. Will go from there.
Welcome to the neighborhood, guys. Good luck.
* - As I’ve said a bunch of times before, while I think most of the local by-the-slice places are just okay, Luzzo’s is this Editor’s Pick for Best Pie in the neighborhood, if not the city.
[UPDATE]: Proto’s is on Tumblr!
